Schools in the United States are turning to teletherapy in response to several mental health struggles among the youth.

What is teletherapy?

Simply said, teletherapy is an online version of psychological treatment. Like conventional in-person methods, the treatment is provided by a licensed and certified therapist via a secure connection.

U.S. schools have reportedly turned to teletherapy in response to school-related bullying, friendship issues and the broader challenges of returning to in-person schooling after distance learning. This service, offered by 16 of the largest U.S. public school districts, addresses the shortfall in in-person practitioners and has contracts worth over $70 million.

This teletherapy boom has attracted venture capitalists, prompting the growth of tech-based companies providing mental health services to schools. However, concerns about the quality of care and the impact of hiring in-person counselors have arisen. Despite this, teletherapy has proven effective for many students, particularly those in rural or lower-income areas where accessing therapy was challenging.

School funding sources for teletherapy

Schools are reportedly leveraging federal pandemic relief funds to cover these services, with some partnering with private companies like Hazel Health, which expanded rapidly and secured multimillion-dollar contracts with areas like Los Angeles County, Hawaii and Miami-Dade. While this growth raises questions about therapist qualifications and privacy protocols, companies like Hazel claim a commitment to child welfare over profit.

New York City has launched a free telehealth therapy service for teens in collaboration with TalkSpace, aiming to democratize access to mental health care. In Hawaii, the use of teletherapy surged following natural disasters, highlighting its importance in providing support during crises.

Parents and educators commend teletherapy for its positive impact on students, helping them navigate emotional challenges, build resilience, and offer reassurance to younger siblings facing similar issues. While concerns persist, teletherapy remains a crucial resource in bridging the gap in mental health services for young people.
