Why You Should Take Mental Health Seriously
Despite technology and social media slowly eliminating the stigma against people opening up and communicating about mental health, there are still a lot of people who shrug off serious issues.
"A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear" author Stan Popovich has shared several reasons why mental health should be taken seriously. Here are some of them.
Mental health issues won't simply go away
There are many reasons why a person would choose to ignore their mental health issues despite the availability of resources and therapy. Among them are fear and shame, lack of insight, limited awareness, feelings of inadequacy, distrust, hopelessness, unavailability, and practical barriers like financial and transportation challenges, according to clinical psychologist David Susman.
Given these reasons, Popovich said that there is no need to be embarrassed when seeking help for mental health because it is just as important as physical health.
Stress is relatable nowadays
The days of getting side eyes and being judged when a person talks about their mental health condition are over. Today's advancements in technology and communication have helped tremendously in letting people know that stress is a normal experience that anybody can go through.
Popovich explained that when a person honestly expresses that they are under a lot of stress, other people would likely stop bothering them because they can relate to it. In some cases, it can even strengthen the bond between individuals. In one study, experts even found that shared stress created a bond among coworkers, which made them want to stay in their organization despite it.
