Multivitamins Could Slow Memory Loss in Elderly: Study

Multivitamins are mostly designed to improve a person's physical health. But in a new study, researchers said they could also slow down memory degradation in older adults.

A study with over 3,500 participants highlighted the potential benefits of daily multivitamin supplementation in mitigating age-related memory decline among older individuals. Researchers examined individuals randomly assigned to either a multivitamin or a placebo. The study lasted three years and utilized a web-based memory test at various intervals.

Replicating cognitive benefits

Participants taking the daily multivitamins displayed notably better memory performance than those on the placebo. The improvement equated to approximately 3.1 years in memory performance, when compared to the placebo group.

This wasn't the first study to identify cognitive advantages linked to multivitamin consumption. A previous trial, COSMOS-Mind, similarly showcased a significant slowdown in cognitive aging, reinforcing the positive impact of multivitamins on cognition.

Is there a key ingredient?

While the study affirmed the cognitive benefits, researchers are yet to pinpoint the exact component of multivitamins responsible for the observed cognitive enhancements. Understanding this aspect remains pivotal for further comprehension.

An earlier study focused on Centrum Silver due to its widespread usage and track record. However, it is unclear if other brands would yield similar results. Moreover, the study's duration might not capture long-term cognitive effects adequately.
