It is a digital age, especially for dating.

With technology and its presentation of so many options, it is easy to get caught up in the moment. A study has found that an abundance of dating options leads to dissatisfaction. Additionally, the alarming association between perceived success on dating apps and an intention to commit infidelity emphasizes the need for clarity in relationships.

The importance of timing and commitment

Signaling commitment starts early, with the first few dates being crucial. For those fresh out of a long-term relationship, keeping conversations focused on the present is advised. Premature discussions about distant plans might hinder the natural progression of the relationship.

Whether subtly or directly, communicating intentions sets the stage for a stronger, more secure relationship. Being transparent about commitment signals not only distinguishes a person from the crowd but also lays the foundation for a relationship where open communication is valued and rewarded.

Couple and family psychologist Greg Matos has shared tips on how to subtly tell your partner that you are ready for a commitment in the modern dating scene:

Tip #1: Delete the dating apps

After a couple of months or around 8 to 12 dates, consider deleting dating apps. This communicates a desire to focus emotional resources on the budding connection. Mentioning the action to your partner expresses your investment in the relationship without demanding reciprocation.

Tip #2: Plan a trip together

After four months together, planning a weekend getaway signals a commitment to the future. This indirect approach allows both partners to envision a more extended relationship without explicitly discussing labels.

Tip #3: Talk it out

Initiating a direct conversation about feelings and intentions becomes easier after establishing indirect signals. Asking your partner about their thoughts on the relationship provides an opportunity for open communication, reducing the fear of rejection.
