Research Sheds Light on How Dancing Improves Mental Health
In a new study, researchers revealed the efficacy of structured dance programs lasting at least six weeks in enhancing psychological and cognitive health.
The study covered a broad range of participants aged 7 to 85, including healthy individuals and those with chronic conditions like Parkinson's disease or heart failure.
The researchers compared dance interventions of various genres, such as theatrical, aerobic, traditional and social dance, with other forms of physical activity like team sports, martial arts, walking and weight training.
Results suggested that structured dance is generally as effective as or occasionally even more beneficial than other activities for enhancing emotional well-being, depression, motivation, social cognition, and some aspects of memory.
Lead author Dr. Alycia Fong Yan noted that dance may be particularly advantageous due to its cognitive challenges, social interactions in partnered or group settings and the artistic aspects that improve psychological well-being.
Additionally, dance offers an enjoyable alternative to conventional exercises, potentially aiding adherence to physical activity regimens.
Other health benefits of dancing
The research highlighted the broader health benefits of dance, including its potential to reduce the risk of sedentary-related health conditions, alleviate symptoms of mental health issues and enhance cognitive function, particularly in older adults.
While the focus varied by age group, with younger individuals mainly addressing psychological outcomes and older adults focusing on cognitive capacity, the overall evidence supports dance as a superior intervention for improving psychological and cognitive health across different age ranges.
Dr. Fong Yan emphasized that structured dance can serve as an evidence-based alternative for individuals who may prefer it over traditional forms of exercise, ultimately reducing the burden of health conditions on the healthcare system.
The new study complemented previous research on the physical health benefits of dancing, demonstrating its far-reaching positive effects on overall well-being.
