Over the past couple of years, the 75 Hard Challenge has gained popularity as a rigorous fitness and mental toughness program. However, despite its physical benefits, many people question how it impacts the mental health of people who participate in it.

The 75 Hard Challenge requires participants to adhere to a strict regimen for 75 consecutive days, comprising two daily workouts, following a diet without cheat meals, drinking a gallon of water, reading 10 pages of non-fiction and taking a progress photo. Proponents argue that the challenge builds discipline, resilience and mental toughness.

Potential psychological advantages and disadvantages

Aside from the obvious physical health benefits, engaging in regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy diet are known to positively influence mental well-being. Exercise promotes the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters associated with mood enhancement and stress reduction. Additionally, adhering to a structured routine can create a sense of accomplishment and control, which can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Despite the potential benefits, the 75 Hard Challenge presents several challenges to mental health as well. The pressure to adhere strictly to the regimen may worsen tendencies of perfectionism, leading to increased stress and feelings of failure if unable to meet the requirements. Additionally, the emphasis on physical appearance through progress photos may contribute to body image concerns and self-criticism.

Overtraining and burnout

Engaging in two daily workouts for an extended period raises concerns about overtraining and physical exhaustion. Overtraining can lead to decreased motivation, increased irritability and even injury, which then negatively impacts mental well-being. The relentless nature of the challenge may also increase the risk of burnout, as participants may struggle to sustain such a demanding lifestyle long-term.

While the 75 Hard Challenge offers potential physical and psychological benefits, its intense nature requires caution. Individuals should prioritize their mental well-being and consider modifying the challenge to suit their needs and capabilities.
