The issue of sexual desire disparity is a common challenge addressed by sex and relationship therapists, often leading to frustration and tension within couples. Factors influencing desire include biological, psychological, social and relational aspects.

Impact of traditional gender roles

Traditional gender roles, where men are primary earners and decision-makers while women manage household and childcare duties, play a significant yet complex role in sexual desire. Men generally have higher desires than women, especially in male-dominated cultures, possibly due to societal emphasis on male sexual prowess.

A study on Israeli heterosexual couples revealed that those adhering to traditional gender roles reported lower desire and attraction towards their partners. This lower desire may stem from conservative beliefs around sexuality, inhibiting sexual expression and freedom.

Men and women subscribing to traditional roles may experience sexual guilt, shame, and feelings of inequality or inferiority. Women in such roles tend to engage in sex primarily upon their partner's initiation, indicating a lack of personal agency.

Conversely, individuals opposing traditional gender roles reported more frequent sexual activity and greater alignment in dyadic desire. Rejecting traditional roles prioritizes personal agency and fosters sexual expression based on romantic connection and mutual pleasure rather than obligation.

Gender equality and sexual satisfaction

The study highlights that gender equality enhances attractiveness and promotes desire, leading to greater sexual pleasure and satisfaction. These findings emphasize the importance for clinicians to acknowledge the impact of gender roles, particularly despite trends like the "tradwife" movement advocating for traditional roles despite modern freedoms.

Ultimately, both men and women are likely to experience heightened sexual pleasure and desire when treated as equals both inside and outside the home. The study recommends prioritizing gender equality as it creates more satisfying and fulfilling relationships.
