In a study from 2023, researchers found a positive link between incorporating nature into urban environments and youth mental health.

Forest bathing, defined as quiet immersion in natural surroundings while deep breathing, was found to reduce stress and enhance well-being among adolescents.

Through real-time surveys conducted in various urban settings, including parks, trails and city centers, the study found that exposure to natural spaces consistently correlated with improved emotional responses in youth. For instance, merely spending a few minutes by an urban lake led to a nine percent decrease in anxiety levels, contrasting with a thirteen percent increase in busy downtown locations.

Given the prevalence of depression and anxiety among adolescents, having nature motifs on buildings, green spaces and landscape elements, such as trees and gardens, significantly enhanced positive emotional experiences for young people.

These findings emphasize the importance of integrating natural elements into urban design, offering planners and city builders evidence-based strategies to promote healthier and more sustainable cities for all age groups.

Forest bathing, urban green spaces and mental health

As city living continues to increase in popularity, urban green spaces have become essential to promoting mental health and well-being in these areas. Studies consistently highlight the positive effects of greenery on mental health, showing that access to parks and gardens can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

Aside from providing opportunities for relaxation, physical activity, and social interaction, green spaces have also been linked to enhanced cognitive function and better attention restoration. Recognizing the importance of urban green spaces, city planners and policymakers are increasingly prioritizing their preservation and expansion to create healthier and more livable cities. By investing in accessible and well-maintained green areas, cities can promote mental well-being and create more vibrant and sustainable communities for residents to thrive.
