Sports Gambling Addiction: Who are the Most at Risk?

Scientists may have found an explanation for why young men are at a high risk of getting addicted to sports gambling.

The impulse control center of the brain in young men is still developing in their late teens and early 20s. This developmental phase, referred to as the "second window of development," is crucial as good and bad habits form during this time.

In a report, Rosa Li from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Psychology and Neuroscience warned that the legalization of online sports betting in North Carolina, starting March 11, 2024, could particularly endanger this demographic. Ads promoting these platforms, featuring celebrities and athletes, may glamorize the activity, making it seem socially acceptable and enticing to young males.

Regulating age restrictions

Li expresses concern that the allure of online sports betting may prove difficult to regulate, especially regarding age restrictions. Unlike traditional casinos with ID checks, enforcing age limits online poses challenges. She highlights the risk of underage individuals accessing these platforms due to their digital proficiency.

In New York, the approval of mobile sports betting in 2022 has worsened the issue, with 39% of men aged 18 to 49 and 20% of women in the same age group having online betting accounts. Despite a reported surge in help requests from young sports bettors, only 9% of bettors seek assistance for controlling or stopping problem gambling.

Addressing sports gambling addiction

Recognizing signs of withdrawal, such as irritability when unable to bet, and other behaviors like chasing losses, neglecting responsibilities, or inability to stop gambling, is crucial in addressing potential issues associated with sports betting addiction.

It is important to raise awareness through educational campaigns, offer accessible counseling services and provide access to support groups. Authorities also recommend encouraging responsible gambling practices and promoting alternative forms of entertainment.
