Mpox Resurgence: Experts Urge Taking Precautions

According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cases of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, have surged in the United States, nearly doubling compared to the same period last year.

While the widespread outbreak of 2022 has subsided, health experts emphasize the need for continued precautions, especially among vulnerable populations.

Dr. Jenni McQuiston, deputy director of the CDC's high consequence pathogens and pathology division, stressed that most reported cases involve individuals who are either unvaccinated or under-vaccinated.

The Jynneos vaccine, administered in two doses, is recommended for those exposed to mpox or with potential exposure due to certain high-risk behaviors.

Eligible groups include individuals with multiple sexual partners, those with immune-compromising conditions like HIV, and men who have sex with other men.

Dr. John Brownstein, chief innovation officer at Boston Children's Hospital, noted the importance of vaccination efforts targeting high-risk groups to curb the increasing trend.

While the vaccine primarily reduces the severity of illness, it may not provide absolute protection against infection. People are encouraged to complete the two-dose regimen for maximum effectiveness.

"Vaccines don't always 100% prevent disease, they ultimately reduce the severity of disease. So, seeing people contract mpox after vaccination is not unexpected. But we have seen less severe disease in the majority of patients with mpox in this current outbreak," Dr. Richard Silvera, associate program director of the infectious diseases fellowship, explained to ABC News.

Recent research presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases conference showed a decline in antibodies one year post-vaccination, prompting ongoing studies on long-term efficacy.

However, concerns regarding vaccine supply remain minimal, with efforts underway to ensure accessibility and distribution.

Despite the absence of vaccine-related issues in New York City, health authorities remain vigilant for any potential emergence of more lethal mpox strains.

Vigorous monitoring and preventive measures, including vaccination and regular communication with partners, are recommended strategies to mitigate transmission risks.

In addition to vaccination, experts advise adherence to regular precautions and prompt medical care for lesions to minimize the spread of the virus.

Antiviral medications like Tpoxx are available for treating severe mpox cases, particularly among people with heightened susceptibility.
