Loneliness has grown to be a pressing concern all over the world. In Ohio, particularly, experts warn of its detrimental impact on public health. Comparing its effects with smoking and obesity, health professionals highlight the severity of the issue, emphasizing its prevalence even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

What experts are saying

In a report, former director of the Ohio Department of Health Dr. Amy Acton shared the alarming statistic that approximately one in two people in Ohio experience severe loneliness at any given time. This was made worse by the pandemic, raising serious health concerns, which are comparable to the consequences of smoking and obesity.

The loneliness epidemic extends beyond adults, with children and teenagers also bearing its brunt. Last year, high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, often facing challenges in accessing mental health support.

Dr. Megan Schabbing noted the challenges faced by teenagers who feel hopeless and isolated, stressing the importance of social support networks in mitigating loneliness among youth.

While seeking social connections initially may be a coping mechanism for loneliness, chronic isolation can have detrimental effects on mental and physical health.

Dr. Whitney Raglin Bignall has warned that prolonged loneliness can lead people to believe that others do not want their presence, exacerbating feelings of alienation and pushing away potential sources of support.

The role of technology

Technology, while facilitating connectivity through social media platforms, also contributes to feelings of loneliness. Bignall pointed out that excessive reliance on digital devices harms genuine interpersonal connections, creating a sense of isolation even in the presence of others.

The power of kindness

In combating loneliness, Acton emphasized the transformative power of kindness. She is advocating for connection, compassion and care as antidotes to loneliness, highlighting the importance of fostering meaningful relationships and supportive communities.
