Here's How Wars Affect Global Mental Health
Wars have far-reaching impacts on global mental health, affecting even those living in safety.
Wars: Impact on Mental Health
In Ukraine, the ongoing conflict has severely affected mental health. Approximately 80% of Ukrainians experience constant stress and anxiety, leading to significant mental health issues. The ever-present danger and constant alerts have created a pervasive sense of fear and uncertainty. This collective psychological trauma manifests in various health problems, including increased rates of diabetes, heart attacks, and strokes.
Global Mental Health Crisis
The mental health burden extends beyond Ukraine. The Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, which includes prominent figures like Olena Zelenska, has highlighted mental health as a critical issue. A survey by Alligator Digital, involving over 11,000 participants, identified mental health as one of the top global challenges. The findings indicate that conflict-related anxiety and fear contribute significantly to the mental health crisis. Remarkably, even those in countries not directly affected by conflict report experiencing emotions that disrupt their daily lives.
Impact on the Youth
The survey also revealed that young people, particularly those aged 13 to 15, are the most affected by conflict-related mental health issues. This highlights the vulnerability of the younger generation to the psychological effects of wars, even when they are not directly exposed to violence.
Addressing Mental Health in Conflict Zones
Ukraine's response to the mental health crisis serves as a model for other conflict-affected regions. The All-Ukrainian mental health program, called "How are you?", trains family doctors and other professionals to provide primary psychological assistance. This initiative aims to help people manage anxiety, insomnia, and fear. The program also promotes self-help and encourages open discussions about mental health, challenging the stigma associated with seeking psychological support.
Global Implications and Solutions
The lessons from Ukraine's mental health program can be applied globally. Training professionals in psychological assistance and promoting mental health awareness are crucial steps in addressing the global mental health crisis caused by conflicts. Additionally, preventing wars and addressing aggression at its roots is essential to reducing the primary source of conflict-related mental health issues. By preventing wars and ensuring justice for aggressors, the world can mitigate the mental health impacts of conflicts and foster a sense of security and well-being.
