Silent depression, also known as high-functioning depression, can go unnoticed even by those suffering from it.
What is Silent Depression?
Silent depression occurs when an individual experiences depressive symptoms without being fully aware of them or acknowledging them. This condition often involves internal struggles with symptoms that are either denied, minimized, or unrecognized.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 4.7% of US adults aged 18 and older regularly experience feelings of depression. However, this statistic only accounts for those who are aware of their condition. Identifying the signs of silent depression is essential for addressing the issue.
Signs of Silent Depression
Lack of Energy
Consistently feeling drained and fatigued can be an indicator of depression. If someone frequently lacks energy, it may signal an underlying mental health issue.
Sleeping Problems
Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep due to ruminating thoughts is common in depression. Insomnia or excessive sleeping can be signs of silent depression.
Change in Appetite
