Can Traditional Chinese Medicine Help Boost Mental Health?

In the quest for better mental health, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) stands as a time-honored practice offering holistic solutions rooted in millennia-old wisdom. TCM views the body and mind as interconnected, utilizing techniques such as acupuncture and herbal medicine to optimize mental well-being.

Originating in China and practiced across Asia for centuries, TCM treats the body's imbalances by focusing on the flow of vital energy, or Qi, along meridian pathways. Dr. Tedi Fisher, RAc, a kinesiologist and owner of The Nest Clinic, explains that TCM complements Western medicine by addressing underlying causes of mental health issues like anger or moodiness through techniques such as acupuncture and herbal remedies.

Dr. Danielle Baert, BSc, RAc, noted TCM's personalized approach, where treatments are tailored to individual health histories and symptoms. This customization allows TCM to effectively manage a wide range of mood disorders including depression, anxiety, and grief.

Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture

Herbal medicine in TCM involves prescribing specific formulas designed to rebalance energies affecting mental states. Michelle Oravitz of Wholesome Lotus emphasizes how herbs like Red Ginseng root or Codonopsis root can enhance emotional well-being by targeting organ systems linked to mood regulation.

"We often use herbal formulas to support the heart Qi and heart blood, which impact the mind, according to TCM," Oravitz explained as per Very Well Mind. "This can not only impact the way a person feels by lowering anxiety, but it can also impact a person's sleep because it can calm the mind."

Acupuncture, another cornerstone of TCM, promotes mental balance by stimulating Qi flow through precise needle placements. According to Oravitz, this technique supports relaxation and overall well-being, complementing herbal remedies in treating mood disorders.

"Acupuncture by itself is often powerful enough to greatly influence mood, but some patients may need Chinese herbal medicine as well depending upon their TCM diagnosis," Dr. Baert said.

Mind-Body Practices

In addition to acupuncture, practices like Tai Chi and mindfulness meditation are advocated in TCM for their ability to reduce anxiety, enhance mood, and improve cognitive function through focused movements and deep breathing.

Integrative Approaches

TCM practitioners often integrate their treatments with Western medication, offering patients a holistic approach to managing mental health. Dr. Baert notes that combining TCM with Western therapies can enhance treatment outcomes, allowing patients to manage symptoms effectively and, in some cases, reduce dependency on medication.

Whether used independently or in conjunction with Western medicine, TCM offers a holistic pathway to mental wellness. For those considering TCM therapies, Dr. Fisher advises choosing licensed practitioners who align with individual health philosophies and treatment goals.
