Coffee Drinkers May Live Longer, Study Finds

A recent study suggests that drinking coffee could be key to living a long life.

Researchers at the Medical College of Soochow University in Suzhou, China, led by Huimin Zhou, have published new findings on the relationship between coffee consumption and mortality. The study, appearing in the journal BMC Public Health, used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). This survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, collected information from 10,639 participants between 2007 and 2018.

The analysis revealed that sedentary coffee drinkers had a 24% lower risk of death compared to sedentary individuals who did not drink coffee. Specifically, non-coffee drinkers who sat for more than six hours a day faced a 58% higher risk of death from all causes compared to those who drank coffee and sat for less than six hours daily.

Impact of Sitting Time

The study highlighted the dangers of prolonged sitting.

People who sat for more than eight hours daily faced a 46% greater risk of dying from any cause and a 79% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases compared to those who sat for not more than four hours a day. These results highlight the critical need to minimize sedentary habits.

Benefits of Coffee Consumption

Those who drank more than two cups of coffee per day experienced a 33% reduced risk of death from all causes and a 54% reduced risk of death from cardiovascular diseases, compared to non-coffee drinkers. This suggests that coffee may have protective health benefits, especially in reducing the risks associated with cardiovascular diseases.
