Treating Migraines With Chiropractic Treatments
Migraines, a severe type of headache, can be debilitating, but chiropractic treatments may offer some relief for sufferers.
About Migraines
Migraines are a neurological condition characterized by intense, throbbing headaches, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. While there is no cure, various treatments exist to alleviate symptoms, including medication and lifestyle adjustments.
About Chiropractic Treatments for Migraines
Chiropractic treatments involve manual therapy, primarily spinal manipulation, and are considered an alternative approach to migraine relief. Multiple clinical studies suggest that chiropractic care can be beneficial for some individuals with migraines.
However, the results are mixed, with some studies indicating the benefits might be due to a placebo effect. The effectiveness of chiropractic care can vary significantly from person to person.
Placebo Effect
Some potential benefits of chiropractic treatments for migraines have been noted in several studies. A 2017 study indicated that there was no significant difference between patients receiving spinal manipulation and those receiving a placebo; both groups reported fewer migraine days. This suggests that more extensive research is needed to determine the true effectiveness of chiropractic care.
Risks and Side Effects
Chiropractic treatments can carry risks and side effects, similar to any other medical treatment. Common side effects include increased pain, muscle discomfort, headaches, and tingling or numbness in the upper limbs. These effects generally subside within 24 hours.
More serious adverse effects, although rare, can include spinal cord injury, cauda equina syndrome, collapsed lung, and worsening of lumbar disc herniations. Accurate reporting of adverse effects in manual therapy trials is often lacking, which makes it difficult to gauge the true risk.
For Children
Children, like adults, can suffer from migraines. Chiropractic care is also sought for children, though the evidence supporting its safety and efficacy is limited. Parents should consult with their child's pediatrician before opting for chiropractic treatments.
Other Types of Headaches
Chiropractors also treat other types of headaches, such as cervicogenic headaches, which originate from the neck, and tension headaches, which are common and often related to stress. Therapeutic approaches for these headaches may include spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy, and stress management.
