Oklahoma Dog Brings Home Dead Baby, Police Search for Mother
A dog roaming the streets of Oklahoma City came home Saturday carrying the body of a dead baby girl in its mouth, according to local news.
According to KOCO, an unnamed house sitter was at the home when the dog brought the newborn body back to his Oklahoma City home.
The house sitter, whose name has not yet been released, said that Luke, the 6-month-old mixed breed "free spirit" pup, showed up at his owner's door with the body of a three to five-pound newborn in his mouth, according to KFOR news station. The baby's body had reportedly been wrapped in plastic.
"He was carrying it just like a momma pup and laid it at my feet," she told KFOR, adding that the body had no markings or signs of trauma.
She stressed that Luke would never hurt anyone and believes the dog was just trying to help the newborn girl.
"I believe [Luke] found it, picked it up and brought it. There was no trauma you could tell he inflicted," she said.
"We don't know where the baby came from," Police Captain Dexter Nelson told KFOR. "If it was born in the area outside or if someone brought the baby out there to dispose of it."
"We just know due to the nature of the body the female, the mother could be in some danger as far as her health," he said.
Police have been going door-to-door in the area where the infant was found hoping to find those responsible.
"We're trying to make contact with every resident in the area to determine if they saw anything, if they are familiar with the dog, if the dog was in their area," Nelson said, according to KFOR.
Authorities are now in the process of determining whether the baby girl was born alive or stillborn.
