Despite the fact that April Fool's Day is but one day a year, April is already turning out to be a big month for food items that sound like jokes. Unlike the fanfare of the Pizza Hut Crazy Cheesy Crust Pizza, though, Dunkin' Donuts has ruled out its own addition quietly and in select restaurants. Recent reports have found that Dunkin' Donuts has introduced a glazed donut breakfast sandwich in a few of its eastern Massachusetts eateries. Of course, the move was not quiet for long.

"A few select Dunkin' Donuts restaurants in eastern Massachusetts are currently carrying a Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich. The sandwich features bacon and a pepper fried egg on a glazed yeast ring donut. We constantly strive to offer a wide variety of products to satisfy the needs of our guests," the company said in a statement to the Florida Times-Union.

News first got out of eastern Massachusetts when Associated Press writer Candice Choi tweeted a picture of the sandwich. Since then, the introduction has been greeted with a mix of shock and delight.

The sandwich has only been available for two days, but the company seems pleased with the reception so far. A spokeswoman for Dunkin' Donuts said to the Atlantic Wire, "We are pleased with the response so far, however, we cannot share any specific sales data. That said, the product has only been in restaurants for two days so we have limited information available."

Dunkin' Donuts is hardly trying something others have not before. As Eater points out, a hodgepodge of local establishments, state fairs and even Paula Deen have put together virtually the same creation. However, Dunkin' Donuts would mark the first time the dish was served by a national chain.

For people in the area who may be curious but who are concerned about the effect that it may have on their waistlines, the sandwich is surprisingly not loaded in calories. A spokeswoman for the company said that the sandwich tipped the scales at only 360 calories. That is less than a fifth of the calories needed for the typical American adult, and has fewer calories than the Sausage McMuffin.

The sandwich costs $2.99.
