With summer just around the corner, more men and women are hitting the gym or turning to last minute diets to tone up their arms and abs. For some people, lifting weights and skipping desserts still might not be enough to give them the body they want. According to the latest statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), arm lift plastic surgeries have been on the rise within the past decade. The percentage of women asking to have arms like First Lady Michelle Obama or Actress Jessica Biel has apparently soared by over 4,000 percent.

Not only did the ASPS cite celebrities as one of the leading possible reasons for this jump, the agency also acknowledged the recent surge of sleeveless clothing within the fashion industry. Based from the numbers in 2000, over 300 American women had gone under the knife for upper arm lifts, which include liposuction or brachioplasty. Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that removes loose skin from the back of the arms, which can leave a scar. In 2012, the number of women getting arm list procedures done increased to over 15,000.

"Women are paying more attention to their arms in general and are becoming more aware of options to treat this area," said Gregory Evans, the president of ASPS. "For some women, the arms have always been a troublesome area and, along with proper diet and exercise, liposuction can help refine them. Others may opt for a brachioplasty when there is a fair amount of loose skin present with minimal elasticity."

Although the researchers and doctors stated that there was no one distinct reason for the increased popularity of this procedure, another poll conducted by the ASPS found that women are paying more attention to the toned arms of famous female celebrities. This poll discovered that women admired the arms of Michelle Obama the most, followed by actress Jennifer Aniston. Other popular celebrity arms included Jessica Biel, actress Demi Moore and TV talk host, Kelly Ripa. Even though the doctors state that the upper arm lift procedure is not difficult, they continue to stress the importance of exercise and diet in helping people maintain their bodies.
