Office Workers Often "Too Tired" to Exercise

After a day of sitting in the office, employees are often "too tired" to exercise, according to a new study.

The latest study involved 111 employees from 55 organizations. The participants were asked to fill out an online survey.  Researchers wanted to identify barriers and enablers for physical activity and nutrition and develop intervention strategies for health promotion in office settings.

The findings revealed that the workers cited fatigue and access to unhealthy food as the most common barriers to exercise and good nutrition.  However, enjoyment of physical activity and knowledge of nutrition were cited as the most common enablers of healthy behaviors.

"Many barriers highlighted the limited amount of time available to employees outside of working hours and the need to ensure healthy and supportive environments in the workplace," lead author Krysten Blackford, of Curtin University in Perth, Australia, and colleagues wrote in the study.

"Intervention-strategy preferences demonstrated employee support for health promotion in the workplace," they added.

The findings are published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease
