Sunscreens Targeted to Children Recalled for Contamination

By Cheri Cheng | Update Date: Sep 27, 2013 09:46 AM EDT

In order to protect the skin from harmful rays and burns, people must use sunscreens habitually. By starting young children on a daily routine that includes applying sunscreen, children can develop the habit of protecting their skin. However, not all sunscreen products are made the same. According to Badger, which markets its natural and organic sunscreen products for babies and young children, around 30,000 tubes of sunscreens were recently recalled due to contamination.

According to the statement, the New Hampshire Company's voluntary recall includes all lots of the four-ounce SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen Lotion and one lot of the four-ounce SPF 30 Kid Sunscreen Lotion.  These products were all shipped out back in February. During the time, all of the products had passed testing. After routine quality checks, the company discovered three microbes, which were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida parapsilosis and Acremonium fungis. Acremonium fungis was found in an open sample. Acremonium fungis can cause an infection when it comes into direct contact with an open wound on the skin.

So far there has been no reported cases of an infection or illness arising from the contaminated products. The CEO, Bill Whyte publicly apologized for the contamination problem and hopes that no one will be adversely affected. He added that the contamination would most likely only cause problems for immune-compromised people or people with damaged skin.

The company informs consumers who want a refund to call the company's number at 1-800-603-6100 or contact them via recalls@badgerbalm.com. All reactions or infections caused by the product must be reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
