Less Physical Activity Leads To Arthritis Among Youth
As the modern lifestyle had changed the work culture among youth, cases of knee pain and spine pain have become common problem. Its because youngsters have to sit for hours working without indulging in any physical activity.
These are initial symptoms of arthritis, expanding its reach among the youngsters at very alarming rate.
On the occasion of World Arthritis Day, (October 12) many noted orthopedic surgeons participated in the talk organized by TOI.
Experts explained that the mobile joints consisted of bearing surfaces of bone and are covered with firm slippery articular cartilage. Once a person is affected with arthritis, the complete delicate structure is destroyed.
"Treatment of arthritis in elderly people is well established in the form of sacrificing natural joint and replacing them by artificial joints. Dr Tripathi also suggested that young people should protect their bones through vitamin and mineral rich diet.
The word 'arthritis' is composed out of two different Greek words, 'athron' meant joints and 'itis' meant inflammation. In the early stages of the disease the entire body is involved and one or two joints may become completely deformed. As a result the patient is left handicapped and also somewhat weakened.
"It is a condition in which inflammation results in pain in the joints, caused by wearing of the cartilage that covers and acts as a cushion inside joints. As the bone surface become less protected by cartilage, the patient experiences pain upon weight bearing, including walking and standing," he later added.
Taking about the symptoms of arthritis experts said it included pain and limited function of joints.
"Symptoms in some patients with certain forms of arthritis can also include fever, gland swelling (swollen lymph nodes), weight loss, fatigue, feeling unwell and even symptoms from abnormalities of organs such as the lungs, heart or kidney, " said deputy chief medical officer Vivek Srivastava, according to TOI.
