As many as 25 million Indians might be suffering from osteoporosis, a new study claims. The age at which osteoporotic fractures occurs in Indian might be less in average than West.

The major cause of osteoporosis in women is accelerated bone loss just after menopause. As the body ages, series of changes take place in our body. One such change is the losing of bone mass or density. Losing of bone mass or density is obvious to both men and women but women are more prone to it. The bones start losing vitamin D, calcium and other minerals.

There comes a time when those bone become extremely porous and subsequently become weak too. The condition is described often as osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is one reason why there are so many cases of knee, shoulder and hip injuries occur especially in elder people.

Recent studies also point that there is widespread deficiency of vitamin D across India. The deficiency is one of the major reason of poor bone health of Indians. Along with Vitamin D, sunlight exposure too is a major factor for the condition.

The worst part of the disease is that it is going to stay in the human body without any symptoms. The symptoms are visible only when the bones start fracturing. There are also some cases in which the disease go undetectable.

Smoking and alcohol consumption are two of the main risk factors for the osteoporosis. Low estrogen levels is equally critical.

As a part of osteoporosis prevention, one should ensure a calcium rich diet. Researchers advised that getting a routine bone density check up after the age of 35 can also help in detecting the osteoporosis prior.
