Ice Cream That Glows When You Lick It
Lick Me I’m Delicious, British ice cream maker, has created a glow-in-the-dark ice cream by using synthesised jellyfish proteins. Jellyfish are marine creatures that produce light inside their bodies.
The glowing confection are going to cost a bomb (around $200 per scoop) but the creator of the product Charlie Francis says it “tastes pretty good” and is not at all dangerous.
“I don’t seem to be glowing anywhere,” said Francis according to SFGate.
Lick Me I’m Delicious specialises in exotic ice cream flavours. The company has experimented with more than two-hundred flavors which includes cheddar cheese, roast beef, rhubarb chocolate macaroons, salted whiskey caramels and raspberry mojito.
The ice cream maker began thinking about the glow-in-the-dark ice cream around six months ago. Their inspiration came from looking at a small red berry which is also known as miracle fruit. When this is eaten it causes our sour foods (lemon) to taste like a sweet candy.
Meanwhile they also came through a research paper of jellyfish which described its property that described their ability to emit light.
“I immediately started geeking up on the subject and eventually found a lab in China, where they are synthesizing the protein and I spoke to the scientists there who agreed to ship me over a sample,” Francis said, according to SFGate.
“The protein we’re using in the ice cream reacts with your tongue at neutral PH, so as your mouth warms up the protein, it will raise the PH level and start to glow,” explained Francis.
But this is not the last experiment for the so-called “edible inventor”.
“I really want to develop an invisible ice cream,” Francis said, according to SFGate. “It’s inherently impossible because of the refraction caused by the ice crystals which make up the ice cream, but I reckon we’ll find a way of doing it.”
