Lunchtime Avocados Can Help You Lose Weight

Having half an avocado during lunch will rid your desire to snack between meals, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that eating half an avocado for lunch increases feelings of fullness and reduces the temptation to snack.

The latest study involved 26 healthy but overweight adults. Researchers wanted to see if avocado consumption influences satiety, blood sugar, insulin response and snacking.

The findings revealed that participants who had half an avocado for lunch reported 40 percent less desire to snack the following three hours and 28 percent less desire to eat over the next five hours

Furthermore, the study revealed that participants in the avocado group were more satisfied over the three hours following the meal.
"Satiety is an important factor in weight management, because people who feel satisfied are less likely to snack between meals," said lead researcher Dr. Joan Sabate, a nutritionist from Loma Linda University, according to the Daily Mail.

"We noted that though adding avocados increased participants' calorie and carbohydrate intake at lunch, there was no increase in blood sugar levels beyond what was observed after eating the standard lunch," Sabate added. "This leads us to believe that avocados' potential role in blood sugar management is worth further investigation."

Researchers noted that additional studies are needed to confirm the latest findings. The findings are published in the Nutrition Journal.
