American Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead From Suspected Drug Overdose at 46, Stars Pay Tribute

The Oscar-winning actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday morning in his New York apartment. He was 46. 

Hoffman's body was found by a friend in his bathroom, who called emergency services. He was declared dead at the scene. 

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers," said Hoffman's family in a statement. 

A "DOA" ("Dead on arrival") investigation has been opened by the New York police department who are also investigating a possible drug overdose, The Guardian reported. The NYPD's enquiry was be carried with another enquiry by Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who will be determining the precise cause of death. 

"I'm very, very saddened by the passing of Phil. He was a wonderful actor. This is one of those times where you say: 'This just shouldn't be'," said Robert De Niro, an American actor, according to BBC

Hoffman's co-star in The Hunger Games described him as "such an incredible actor." "You played an excellent Plutarch. So sad," she wrote.

"I feel so fortunate to have known and worked with the extraordinary Philip Seymour Hoffman, and am deeply saddened by his passing," said Julianne Moore, who co-starred with Hoffman in Boogie Nights, Magnolia and The Big Lebowski. 

"Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of our generation's finest and most brilliant actors. He was also a gifted comedic talent," said Showtime in a statement for whom Hoffman was set to star in his first major TV series, Happyish, BBC reported

"It was a great privilege and pleasure to work with him and we are all absolutely devastated by this sudden loss. Our thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time."
