Kevin Smith Not Interested In Directing DCEU Batman Movie After Ben Affleck Steps Down, George Miller Currently New Fan Favorite
Fans were understandably disappointed when Ben Affleck announced that he will not direct the highly anticipated "Batman" movie that is expected to pit the Bat of Gotham against Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke. However, that hasn't stopped people from calling on "Mallrats" director Kevin Smith to take over the recently vacated job in the DC Extended Universe flick.
Unfortunately, it looks like Kevin Smith is not interested in working on the "Batman" movie because of three simple reasons. With Ben Affleck and the "Mallrats" director out of the way, fans have now turned on the possibility that "Mad Max: Fury Road" helmer George Miller will take on the ambitious DCEU project.
Kevin Smith has recently reacted to the fans' requests that he should direct the "Batman" movie. The "Mallrats" director responded to a fan's Twitter post by first stating that he is "flattered." However, Smith stated that he cannot work on the project because he hasn't "spoken to Ben [Affleck]" for a long time and that he directed "Yoga Hosers". The filmmaker's final reason was very straightforward.
I'm flattered. But 3 things make me directing Batman impossible: 1) Haven't spoken to Ben in years. 2) I made @YogaHosers, 3) Common sense. https://t.co/oTIhA3FtjO

Kevin Smith's tweet didn't just confirm that he wouldn't be directing the "Batman" movie. It also revealed that Ben Affleck will not be one of the returning cast members in the highly anticipated "Mallrats" TV series that Smith will work on later this year. But since both Affleck and Smith have refused to direct the Caped Crusader's solo DCEU flick, fans are now urging George Miller of "Mad Max: Fury Road" to take on the film.
George Miller is not the only big name that's being tossed around as the possible new director for the "Batman" movie. Gavin O'Connor, who worked with Ben Affleck on "The Accountant", is also part of the shortlist that includes Denis Villeneuve and Matt Ross (via Forbes). However, there is no word yet on who will take over the DCEU flick that Kevin Smith refuses to work on.
