Popular Girls’ Health Book Gets an Update
The famous health book for young girls, The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls, is finally getting an update. The new book, The Care & Keeping of You 2: The Body Book for Older Girls, will focus on girls ages 10 and up who will be transitioning through to the confusing times of puberty and adolescence. This new edition will hopefully match the successes of the original book which was published in 1988 and sold up to 3-million copies within the 15 year span.
In the original version, the book's main goal was focused on teaching young girls how to respect their bodies and treat it well. The book also informed girls about the changes they will be growing through when puberty hits and what these changes will look like. Certain aspects of the book, such as teaching girls how to use tampons, attracted parents to the book. The book, however, does not go into mature topics about sex and sexuality. Due to the concentration the book has on simple body topics, it became very popular amongst parents who may not want to jump into more adult topics so soon, and now, the book will serve as a great passage way into the second book once young girls start to enter pre-teen and teen years . In an interview between USA Today, and pediatrician and contributing author to the upgraded version of the book, Cara Natterson, Natterson expressed her opinions and hopes for the newer version of the book.
One particular aspect of the newer book that Natterson is proud of is the section that discusses mood changes. This section focuses on explaining to girls the effects of hormonal changes on their moods which can comfort girls by showing them that what they are feeling is completely normal. In the second version, the authors will concentrate more on emotional issues. It aims to teach young girls why certain things may be happening as opposed to what the changes are, thus delving deeper into the human psyche. Girls at this age experience very confusing and emotional changes, and the purpose of this book is to help young girls understand their bodies while still learning to respect and cherish them.
