Surgeons Grow New Nose To Replace the Original One

A new nose has been grown by surgeons on a patient’s forehead so that it can be transplanted to replace his original one.

Xiaolian, a 22-year-old resident of Fujian province in China badly damaged his nose following an accident that happened in August 2012.

Xiaolian opted for basic medical remedy rather than the sophisticated plastic surgery because of financial constraints. After a few months, his condition began to worsen and his nasal cartilage was corroded. Subsequently, surgeons found it impossible to do a nasal reconstruction.

Then surgeons came up with an idea which was never tried before in the world. They grew a nose on Xiaolian’s forehead.

This unique medical practice involves placing a skin tissue expander on the patient’s forehead. The doctors then cut it into the shape of a normal nose and planted a cartilage taken from the ribs.

Surgeons let that tissue grow for nine months. The shape is now good enough for doctors to perform the transplant.

“We have gone through the hardest step and now it is not difficult to carry out transplant surgery,” said Guo Zhihui, Director of Plastic Surgery Department of Xiehe Hospital Affiliated to Fujian Medical University.

Dr. Zhihui also added that Xiaolian will start a normal life once a successful surgery is done, reported New York Post.
